    Juneau, Alaska is located on what is known as the panhandle of Alaska. It has been the capital of Alaska since 1906. As of the 2000 census Juneau has the population of 30,711. The area of Juneau is almost as large as the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. Downtown Juneau sits at sea level below steep mountains. These mountains contain the Juneau Icefield, a large ice mass with about 30 glaciers.
    Ketchikan is the most southeastern sizable city in the Alaska.. The estimated population of 7,368 in 2007 makes it the fifth most populous city in the state. Ketchikan’s economy is based on tourism and fishing and is known as the “Salmon Capitol of the World.” It is also well known for the Misty Fjords National Monument and has the world’s largest collection of standing totem poles.
