Wasilla, Alaska is the fifth largest city in the state and is part of the Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Borough. Approximate population of 9,900 it is the largest city in the borough and a part of the Anchorage metropolitan area. Sarah Palin was Wasilla’s mayor before her election as Governor of Alaska. She was chosen by John McCain as his vice-presidential running mate in 2008 which gained Wasilla international attention.

Palmer, Alaska began as a railway station on the Matanuska branch of the Alaska Railroad. It is located 42 miles northeast of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway and lies on the north shore of the Matanuska River, in a valley between the Talkeetna Mountains to the north and the Chugach Mountains to the south and east. Estimated population is 80,000. In 1935 the Matanuska Colony was established in which 203 families were brought in and drew 40 acre lots for farming. Palmer is most known for as the home of the Alaska State Fair, where it’s agricultural spirit lives on.
